The diamond industry is regulated by certain standards. The grading, and therefore the evaluation of diamonds, should use the GIA-USA grading system. The GIA stands for Gemological Institute of America. This institution offers classes to learn gemology and will give a degree upon passing rigid testing. That degree is “Graduate Gemologist”. This degree encompasses diamond grading and colored stone grading and testing for synthetics and assembled stones.

Color grading is obvious when you become familiar with the color differences of the different grades. See the chart below for that example.
Clarity grading can be identified by going to the GIA website and study that chart.
